How and why do you think Diaz chose to write it this way?

This week, please write about both of the following two topics. This is not a formal essay. Write about a half a page per topic, no more, and be as specific as possible. How does the form of the story – written as an instructional manual – contribute to the story’s effect? Does it make it serious? Ironic? Satirical? How and why do you think Diaz chose to write it this way? How would it be different if it were written as a third person narrative? Think about the three stories that we’ve read – “How to Date a Brown Girl, Black Girl, White Girl, or Halfie” by Junot Diaz, “When Mr. Pirzada Came to Dine” by Jhumpa Lahiri, and “What You Pawn I Will Redeem” by Sherman Alexie – and free write about how you feel all can be tied together. Do you see common themes? Do you see any similarities in how the stories are told? The characters, symbols, ideas? Explain. This involves reading three different stories
